TERRAIN at the FTTH Council Europe Conference 2012 in Munich
The IBBT ICON project TERRAIN (Techno-economic research for future access infrastructure networks) and the FP7 project OASE (Optical Access Seamless Evolution) were both “associate partner” at the FTTH Council Europe Conference 2012, February 14-16, 2012 in Munich. Both projects were presented at a booth at the large exhibition. Several other TERRAIN partners such as Alcatel-Lucent, TE Connectivity, Euromicron and Comsof also presented their products.
The European FTTH Conference is the largest Fibre-to-the-Home event in the world. This edition attracted an unprecedented 3300 visitors from all over the world.

Workshop on Municipal Fiber Networks - October 24th, 2011 - Ghent, Belgium

We would like to invite you to our workshop on Municipal Fiber Networks, which we are organizing on October 24th (full day) in Ghent, Belgium.
The main goal of our workshop is spreading knowledge from existing fiber network initiatives towards different players involved in potential future deployments. We will tackle expected revenues as well as indirect effects, potential synergies in deployment and operations, and suitable business models. Discussion will be stimulated, both during the sessions, the final panel discussion, coffee and lunch breaks and networking reception.
The workshop will be a full day program. As keynote speaker, Benoît Felten from Diffraction Analysis will outline the fundamental disruptive nature of universal connectivity through next-generation broadband access and how communities can rethink their modes of operation on that basis. Next we will have 3 sessions, each consisting of an actual testimonial presentation from an existing case, a more theoretic perspective and some alternative view, introducing international and local speakers. The panel discussion at the end of the day will bring together representatives from the different cities presenting their views on the actual role of the city in a successful fiber rollout.
The workshop is supported by three projects in which our research group participates (EC FP7-OASE, IBBT TERRAIN and NGInfra Public Benefits). We have also support from FTTH Council Europe, the city of Ghent, Comsof, WCS fiber Optic, Ghent University and IBBT.
More general information, preliminary program and registration form can be found on following website: http://events.ibbt.be/en/workshop-municipal-fiber-networks.
Hope to see you on our event!

TERRAIN at CTTE2011
The TERRAIN project will participate at the CTTE 2011 conference, May 16th-18th, in Berlin, Germany in many ways.
Two papers will be presented written by project partners:
- "Cost allocation model for a synergetic cooperation in the rollout of telecom and utility networks" by Mathieu Tahon et al. (Ghent University/IBBT)
- "Influence of GeoMarketing on the roll-out of new network infrastructures" by Koen Casier et al. (Ghent University/IBBT)
On the last day of the conference, a workshop entitled "Future deployment of optical access networks" is organised by Deutsche Telekom, and supported by the FP7 ICT OASE and IBBT ICON TERRAIN project. Jan Van Ooteghem (Ghent University/IBBT) and Ger Bakker (UNET) will be representing TERRAIN by presenting their view on this topic.

Eurocities Knowledge Society Forum on April 7th-8th, organized by the city of Ghent.
The EUROCITIES Knowledge Society Forum (EUROCITIES KSF) brings together over 100 European cities and business partners, offering a platform for the exchange of knowledge among local governments and the organizations they work with. EUROCITIES KSF is a member-driven network currently chaired by the city of Vienna and vice-chaired by the city of Ghent. Its activities in 2011 are supported by five thematic Working Groups on eInclusion, Open Data, Smart Cities; Broadband and the EU Services Directive.
IBBT will also contribute to this event with talks of Prof. Leo Van Audenhove and Ilse Mariën (IBBT-SMIT) about “Citizen engagement and inclusion”, and Jan Van Ooteghem presenting the IBBT project TERRAIN.

Workshop on “Deployment and Business Impact of Next Generation Optical Access”
Considering the continuous increase in application bandwidth, an upgrade of the access network infrastructure seems inevitable, and FTTH is considered as the next logical step for the access network. However, in Europe, where often a fully buried installation is enforced by legislation, the costs are huge and quickly overweigh the expected revenues. It is crucial to find the optimal deployment strategy taking into account implementation details, technological choices, recurrent operational expenditures future (expected) technologies and migration paths. Next to this, the position and interaction between the different actors in the current (and future) business landscape will also be very important for the development of a valid and sustainable business model. Aligning as much as possible with all actors in the field - municipalities, regulator, customers, operator, vendor, etc. - will be required to get the best feasible business case.
The intention of this workshop is to start up discussions on the different aspects of future deployment of optical access networks. More in particular the workshop will discuss practical implementation issues, long term business models, regulatory impact, technology choice and open access FTTH network business models. In this workshop existing knowledge and input will be brought in from the FP7 ICT OASE and the IBBT ICON TERRAIN project. The workshop is also in cooperation with the Belgian Broadband Platform.
